What is a Mommy makeover?
A ‘Mommy makeover’ combines several surgical procedures that mainly correct the upper and lower body such as the breasts, abdomen, hips and thighs.
This procedure is named after women who experience many physical changes after pregnancy and/or breastfeeding. For example, the breasts may lose volume and sag a little more; the abdominal muscles may be stretched to the point where they no longer provide support; the skin around the stomach area may be excessively saggy, etc. Pretty radical changes and certainly understandable that it does something to your self-confidence.
In a Mommy makeover, two procedures are often carried out at the same time, such as a tummy tuck combined with a breast augmentation and/or breast lift.
Procedure - How does a mommy makeover work?
- During an initial consultation, a personal treatment plan is drawn up for you and your wishes and expectations are discussed.
- On the day of the procedure, the necessary marks will be made on your skin.
- The Mommy makeover is performed under general anaesthesia, which means that you will stay at the clinic overnight.
Abdominoplasty
- An incision is made around the navel on the one hand (to loosen the surrounding tissue), and on the other hand, an incision is made under the bikini line from hip to hip.
- Next, the skin tissue is loosened from the underlying muscles up to the rib arch.
- Flaccid abdominal muscles are sutured together. This is also called "reefing".
- The loosened skin is then pulled down to the incision below the bikini line. Excess tissue is removed and the incision is accurately sutured.
- The navel is repositioned by means of a small hole in the skin. The navel is then sutured in place.
- Sometimes a scar around the navel can be avoided.
- All the steps of this procedure can be found here.
Breast augmentation
- This can be done by using implants or lipofilling. With an implant, a small incision is made under the breast in the future breast fold.
- Then the implant is inserted in front of, behind and partly behind the pectoral muscle. During your initial consultation, we will discuss which placement offers the best result for you.
- All the steps of this procedure can be found here.
Breast lift
- Three incisions are made through the anchor method:
- around the areola;
- from the lower edge of the areola vertically downwards;
- horizontally in the natural curve.
- Then the skin is detached from the underlying tissue.
- The breast tissue is then moved upwards and the excess skin removed. If necessary, the operation can be combined with the placement of a breast prosthesis.
- All the steps of this surgery can be found here.
Advantages
- Your body will once again look tighter, firmer and lifted.
- Excess skin and fat tissue will be gone.
- Your skin will look younger and more resilient.
- Your posture improves considerably.
- Clothing fits better.
- You feel better in your own skin.
Disadvantages or complications
- Haematoma (a build-up of blood under the skin that may require removal)
- Negative reaction to anaesthetics
- Subsequent bleeding
- Infection
- Change of sensation
- Permanent scars
- Damage to underlying structures
- Unsatisfactory aesthetic result
- Scarring (scar tissue that forms internally around the prosthesis. This can make the breast feel stiff and painful).
- Twisting or rupture of the prosthesis
- Gel bleed
Recovery - What can you expect after a Mommy makeover?
- You will stay one night in our clinic for observation. Only after approval of the surgeon will you be allowed to go home the next day.
- Try to arrange transport; you will not be able to drive yourself after all these procedures.
- In the first few days, you will experience pain, a pulling sensation and stiffness around the operated areas. We recommend that you take two tablets of Paracetamol (500 mg) every four to six hours for the pain.
- Swelling and bruising will occur and even get worse in the first few days. These usually subside after day 3.
- Scars will be red and swollen. These take a long time to calm down, something that can take six months to a year and a half.
- Give your body plenty of rest and avoid strenuous exercise, lifting, sports etc. at all times during the first 3 months.
- As soon as your wounds have closed and the scabs have disappeared, you can start applying a soothing and disinfecting scar cream (twice a day).

Also when the areola (the dark area around the nipple) is too large in proportion, this can be surgically corrected.
